Do I need new tires?

  • How old are your tires?
  • How many miles are on your tires?
  • Any damage to the tread or sidewalls?

It’s the beginning of the 2009 cycling season and besides maintaining your bikes shifting and brakes you need to pay special attention to your tires. After all, your tires are what keep you in contact with the road.

Are your tires more than 2 years old? Tires will begin to dry out, crack and separate as they age. This can lead to a blow out and a dangerous situation.

How many miles did you log last year?  Typically, a set of tires is good for 3000 to 4000 miles depending upon road surfaces and number of flats caused by punctures through the tread. This brings us to the topic of damage to the tread or sidewalls of the tire. Brake pads not positioned correctly can damage the sidewall of the tire causing the inner tube to eventually break through and the result is a flat tire. Road surfaces can vary and shoulders can hold a buffet of items just waiting to flatten your tire(s) and ruin your ride.

Examine your tires thoroughly and look for cracks, splits, holes from previous punctures and overall tread ware. If the center of your tire(s) are flat instead of the original rounded profile then you need to change them.
